Morristown Awarded for Turkey Creek Greenway, Phase 5

Phase 5 of the City of Morristown’s Turkey Creek Greenway is one step closer to reality, thanks to a $700,805 Transportation Alternatives Grant, presented to the City by Tennessee Governor Bill Haslam and TDOT Commissioner John Schroer. The grant will be used to connect the planned route from downtown Morristown to Cherokee Drive (Phase 4) northward to Wildwood Park on Shields Ferry Road.

Phase 5 of the Turkey Creek Greenway will include nearly 6,000 feet of 10-foot wide multi-modal asphalt paved path. The trail, which will be located within the abandoned Peavine railroad right-of-way, will include three crosswalks and two pedestrian bridges crossing Turkey Creek.

“As you look across the country, those cities with major trail systems are on the top of the list of communities where young professionals want to live and raise their families,” said Pete Barile, Morristown Area Chamber of Commerce Chairman. “We are glad to see this opportunity to expand our trail system. This is one more tool we can use to recruit business and industries.”

McGill Associates previously designed Phase 4 of the Turkey Creek Greenway Project, which included 2,300 linear foot multi-modal greenway from the trailhead at the Morristown City Center to the trailhead at Cherokee Drive. McGill Associates was also involved in the design and construction of Phases 1-3 of the Turkey Greenway, as well as the City’s Greenway Master Plan.
