Town Creek Park A Successful Venture for McGill Associates
Brunswick County residents and visitors can once again use the facilities at Town Creek Park. Children can run, climb, and play on new, state-of-the-art playground equipment. Baseball and soccer teams can practice and play league games on new fields, and families can stroll through miles of trails.
After more than 18 months of planning and construction, the renovated park reopened in May 2015 and is quickly becoming a hub of activity in the local community. Dog owners no longer have to drive to Wilmington to go to a dog park. Runners and walkers can get a workout along the trails. And, because of the renovations, Town Creek Park is now a safer, more family-friendly recreation spot for area residents and visitors alike.
McGill Associates’ land planning and recreation team worked with Brunswick County officials and community stakeholders to address the needs of the community. The team implemented a master plan for the 35-acre park that included adding new amenities, the renovation of existing facilities, and increased accessibility and connectivity to nearby schools. McGill Associates assisted Brunswick County with applying for a Parks and Recreation Trust Fund (PARTF) grant to help fund the implementation of the master plan recommendations. The application resulted in more than $700,000 in funds.
The $5.3 million park project now includes a baseball / softball complex, two soccer / multi-purpose fields, a dog park, and more than 2.5 miles of trails. Renovation of existing basketball courts, picnic areas, playground areas, improvements to lighting, restrooms and concessions, and expanded parking areas highlight a project that will benefit the community for years into the future.
